The project offers secure email accounts, mailing lists, VPN service (RiseupVPN), and other tools such as chat and collaborative platforms aimed at protecting users from tracking and mass surveillance.

Riseup is an autonomous, left-libertarian–oriented collective founded around 1999–2000 in Seattle to support social movements and organize against mass surveillance and oppressive power structures. It focuses on providing secure, privacy-respecting infrastructure so activists and non‑profits do not have to rely on commercial or state-aligned platforms.

Services are designed with strong encryption and minimal data retention and are widely used by activist groups, NGOs, and individuals concerned with digital privacy.

Many years ago, when Riseup started, the dominant image of a hacker was someone hidden away in a basement. Even then that was wrong but especially for Riseup it was not the case. Riseup was created and supported by people of the movement with a broad skillset, in many basements.

Some have talent with expressing collective ideas or technical issues in written form - others do graphic design work or test and write documentation. And let’s not forget the lovely translators that bring you these words!
